2020 is Over!

This has been a tough year for most people; however, it is almost over now and 2021 is on the horizon! Although a lot of things changed in 2020, we now have a new perspective on the online marketing world. Business has made a big jump to online, as that is probably the new form of shopping for a lot of people. This means that now is a great time for starting or revamping your online business! SEO in 2021 isn’t going to be very different from how it was this year, but it’s still very important to discuss some of the changes that will occur.

Going into the new year, you’re really going to want to focus on quality. The quality of your mobile site, the quality of your desktop site, and the quality of your content are all extremely important. This is going to help you to start your New Year’s SEO journey off on the right foot. Since a lot of business moved online, mobile sites have become extremely popular! So, even though the basics of SEO haven’t changed, your focus should shift more to your mobile site and the quality of your website overall.

I have already mentioned the three major things to focus on with SEO in 2021, but let’s dive into to each one a little deeper.

Creating a Mobile Friendly Site

Before you start changing everything about your mobile site because you think it isn’t very mobile friendly, check out Google’s mobile-friendly testing tool. You get a quick answer, a screenshot of your site from a smartphone view, and details on why your page was or was not mobile friendly.

Investing time into your mobile site is very important moving forward; you want your mobile site to look just as good as it does on desktop. This means making sure it’s very easy to use, has rapid loading times, and users can easily find the information they came for.

In 2020, Google started using mobile-first indexing. This means that it judges your site based on how it works on mobile, so, instead of using desktop indexing on mobile, it now has its own indexing. This isn’t a huge deal; it probably doesn’t change much for most people. However, this means that It is even more important to get your site mobile ready!

Site Quality

To attain your goals for SEO in 2021, you want to make sure you’re doing all you can. The quality of your site is very important and there are multiple ways to improve it if it’s lacking. We’re going to talk about three big things to focus on going into 2021.

Creating Faster speeds

Creating Faster speeds

When you get online to look up information or buy a product, you want to do it quickly; nothing is more frustrating than a website that takes forever to load. If your site is taking too long to load, users are very likely to leave to go find another website to satisfy their needs. If that alone isn’t a great reason to boost your speeds, Google announced that they will now be evaluating page experience in 2021. This goes live in May, so don’t panic! You still have plenty of time to get your site speeds up. However, once Google starts evaluating your speeds, your competitors become an even bigger factor. If a competitor starts having lightning speeds, you’ll be considering as becoming slower. Even though you’re not getting slower, they’re getting faster.

When it comes to faster speeds, who you host with is a big deal. We host with Wp Engine, and while most agencies host through cheaper options, they often find that they are very lacking. We have our very own server that is not shared and is specific to our clients. To learn more about hosting with us, visit our Hosting Page and see everything our monthly hosting provides.

Boost User Experience

Having rapid loading speeds is definitely a factor of user experience, but there are plenty more. In fact, Google laid out three big aspects of user experience in 2020: loading, interactivity, and visual stability. They each have metrics that go along with them, respectively.

  • LCP: Largest Contentful Paint
  • You want this to take place within 2.5 seconds of when the first page begins loading
  • FID: First Input Delay
  • You want your pages to have a FID of less than 100 milliseconds
  • CLS: Cumulative Layout Shift
  • You want your pages to keep up a CLS of less than 0.1

These are core web vitals that your site should follow. If you’re new to this or unsure how to know if you’re hitting the mark, there are online tools to help measure your web vitals. Google has a Chrome User Experience Report to help you figure out what you need to be changing.

User experience goes beyond how easy your website is to use. Don’t get me wrong, that is very important; however, you also want users to enjoy coming to your website. A good web design is going to take user experience to the next level. For example, if there are two sites that function exactly the same, but one looks boring, if you will, and the other is very aesthetically pleasing, most users are going to choose to visit the one that looks the best.

Build Up Your Site structure

Site structure is an extremely important detail to concentrate on to help get you ready for SEO in 2021. The structure of your website is a guide for Google. When Google crawls your pages, it follows links to determine the relationship between pages. So, if you’re structure is tangled up, it is going to be very difficult for Google to crawl your pages and find what it is looking for to rank your website.

Build Up Your Site structure

How to you make sure your site structure isn’t a tangled mess? Here are three ways to get started.

1. Improve your internal links

You want to link to your most important content to show Google that it is your best and most relevant content. Not only does this help Google crawl your pages easily, as I mentioned before, but it also makes it easy and helpful for your readers. This is especially important in blog articles; linking to another relevant article can make finding specific topics very convenient.

2. Examine your categories

You don’t want to write all of your articles on the same topic; you want to have a variety to meet users’ needs. With that being said, if you have some categories that are twice the size of other categories, you need to start writing content about other topics to balance it back out. Another option is to split one big category into two or even three categories to make sure you have close to equal amounts of content for each topic.

3. Remove old content

Out with the old and in with the new. This one is pretty self-explanatory; you have to get rid of content that is no longer relevant or that you have rewrote. This may seem like a common task, but a lot of old content just gets lost on a website. Whether its old blog articles that were rewritten or a product you no longer sell, they need to be removed. However, if the content you’re getting rid of has links to your page, you obviously don’t want to lose that. You can redirect the URL so it will still help you with your SEO!

Content Quality

For SEO in 2021, you really want to have a lot of content on your website. However, when it comes to writing content, you always want to remember quality over quantity. Let’s talk about a few ways to ensure your content is as good as it can be.

Rethinking Keyword Search

Double-Checking Spelling and Grammar

A big part of writing quality content is making sure all the spelling and grammar is correct. Search engines are getting better at evaluating content quality based on spelling and grammar; not to mention, well-written content is more professional and builds up trust with your readers. If you need some help, there are all kinds of free websites out there just for that. Grammarly is an excellent place to start getting your content quality up!

Reevaluating the Content on Your Most Important Pages

While having a lot of content is important, you may have too much to the point it is hurting your SEO. You may have some blog articles that are ranking for the same keywords as other articles. Then, you’re just competing with yourself as well as all of your other competitors. This is something you definitely do not want. However, you don’t have to purge all of your duplicate content; you have a few options on how to fix this issue. You can combine articles that are ranking for the same keyword, and just rewrite a bit to make it all work.

Another thing to do, is to rewrite old content that may not be as good as your newer content. Improving what you have is always a great idea! If you really just think there’s no need for some of your older or duplicate content, you can get rid of it. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to remove some of your articles that are not relevant anymore.
